Week One

A picture of me during our Staff hunt. I'll tell you about it later.
The students have arrived and it has been great getting to know them, where they are coming from, and here what Jesus is doing in their lives this past year as well as what He is doing in their lives now. I'm privileged to be discipling two guys this summer of our bible study of ten young men. Both of my guys are surfers and brought their boards with them here to Charleston. Maybe they will teach me a thing or two about how to catch a wave. Phil is from Atlanta, GA and is attending college here in at Charleston Southern and Ken attends UNC Wilmington. Pray that my time with these guys one on one is Christ centered and memorable.

This past Friday we had a scavenger hunt for our students in the city. It was great in helping the students orientate themselves in downtown Charleston as well as a blast for the staff. We were also a part of the scavenger hunt. The staff dressed up as locals and hid around the city. Students would receive extra points for finding a staff member. I was pretty hard to find as I shaved my face and dressed up as a hippie meditating in the middle of a Waterfront Park. Apparently the disguise was pretty good because my own guys looked straight at me a couple of times and walked past. It was great fun for those who did find the staff. Our staff team was dressed up as runners in the city, bikers, medical students who just got of work, street artist, the elderly, and even dressed up as Charleston elite. It was quiet funny to see the tourist in the area take pictures of our staff team thinking that we were locals.

About half of the project students currently have found jobs. Please pray for the continued provision for those who are picking up a second part time job as well as those students who have yet to find one. The economy may be tough, but God is bigger.

Outreach on this particular project is very unique in comparison to other US Summer Projects. This summer our students and staff are breaking up into three teams: a Bridges Team, a Good News Team, and a Campus Team. Every student will have the opportunity to serve one each of these teams through out the summer. The Good News Team will be working with the community and serving several local churches in the area. The Bridges Team will be focusing on setting up an international student ministry for those in the Charleston area. The Campus Team will be serving the campus and evangelizing to summer students here in Charleston. Charleston is a hot spot for college students to come and live with its exquisite outdoor architecture and rich cultural history of America. With three beaches close from downtown, no wonder it is a hot spot for both tourist and students.

This weekend the Bridges Team will be hosting a root beer float ice cream social on the The College of Charleston. Please pray that great contacts will be made so that students can continue to hang out with these students and love on them this summer. Also, pray for good relations with the international student relations director as we begin this partnership.

The Good News Team will be working with churches in the area to help the area prepare for Hurricane season. Students will be helping gather flash lights, batteries, and other necessary items to prepare less fortunate families. Please pray that students will show Christ to these churches in the area and that we have a servant heart of Christ.

Lastly, the Campus Team will be hitting the beaches were college students hang out on the weekend. Please pray for good conversations as Charleston is a really Liberal city that is cold to any spiritual conversation.
